ATX Power Supplies:
Old ATX Power supplies from old Personal Computers make for very useful layout power source because they allow you to have 3 Volt, 5 Volt, and 12 Volt power in one device, so you can power what you want. Just be sure to look up the specs (images search) for the atx supply you have so you know which port does what as they come in different sizes and with different number of ports over the years. To use these you typically have to 'short out' the 'on switch' by running a wire from the power positive to one of the ground as it won't supply power to any of the other ports unless this is done first.
Most LED lights without a resistor are only 3 volts, so the atx solution is one way to get to 3 volts without having to find another power supply. Other methods of powering 3v leds exist too. 12 Volt 'prewired' LEDs exist that have resistors built in to decrease the power from 9-16 volts or so down to 3 volt internally so you don't need to add more resistors. If you have slot cars or train transformers in the 12-19 volt output range on DC this is what you want for easily tapping in to the train/slotcar transformer. They sell a lot of prewired like this on ebay and amazon. I recently bought the Chanzon 120Pcs 12V 5Mm LED Diode Lights 7.9 Inch Pre Wired (6 Colors X 20Pcs) and love them! You do need to strip them a little more than they are by default to use them well... smallest setting on wires strippers (18 gauge or smaller) seems to be about right, but in some of them you may need to use your fingernails or something to strip a little off to wire it in to your system as the wires are small and fragile, so be careful to not stirp too much off and accidentally cut the wire itself instead of just the insulator. Evan Designs is a great website to buy LEDs when you are after something special like the lights to simulate the Knight Rider car, or flashing ambulance lights for Ghostbuster cars or police scenes. They are a bit pricey. However, it is quality stuff. I did buy the Knight Rider lights but they were too big to put in to my S-Scale cars, so I put them under an old Artin Car for now...
