Uncomfortable facts. Unfiltered data. Direct reality.
Jeffrey S. Thomann · An archive of possibilities

Conceptual.

Art that exists as an idea deserves a place to exist.

A place to document works I imagine, including projects I do not currently have the funds to complete and may never be able to realize. The vision, the questions, and the intended experience can still be recorded and shared.

The intention

A work can begin before it can be built.

Some ideas need a room. Some need a landscape, a public space, a team, or materials beyond what I can afford. Others may be impossible in their original form. This archive gives those ideas a lasting record.

Each entry can preserve the original ambition, explain what the work would mean, and trace how the thinking changes. A drawing, a written score, a digital model, or a small study can become part of that record.

The concept archive

Awaiting the first concept

A space for the ideas still taking shape.

Individual concepts will appear here with their own descriptions, visual studies, and development notes. No project descriptions have been added yet.

A record that can grow

Document a concept

Start with what matters. Unknown costs, uncertain materials, and unanswered questions can remain explicitly unknown.

01 / The essential idea

Give it a title. Describe the work in a few sentences. Record when the idea was first documented and its current stage.

02 / The experience

What would someone see, hear, touch, or move through? Describe the space, sequence, atmosphere, and point of view.

03 / The meaning

What question or tension drives it? Why do these objects, materials, gestures, or relationships belong together?

04 / The physical proposal

Record medium, dimensions, setting, lighting, sound, and duration. Separate firm intentions from possibilities.

05 / The barriers

Describe funding, fabrication, site access, collaborators, permissions, or technical limits. Cost guesses should be labeled as estimates.

06 / The surviving form

Could a sketch, scale model, written instruction, digital scene, or inexpensive study carry the idea forward?

07 / The visual record

Add drawings, diagrams, reference photographs, or mockups. Caption each accurately and record its creator, source, and permissions.

08 / The evolution

Keep dated notes on revisions and unresolved questions. Preserve the original concept when later versions change its direction.

How to add an entry to this page

Open conceptual.html in a text editor. Find concept-entry-template, copy the article inside it, and paste that article at the comment marked ADD CONCEPT ENTRIES HERE.

Replace the bracketed prompts with your own text. Give each entry a unique ID such as concept-001. Remove the “Awaiting the first concept” box when the first entry is ready.

Optional images can go in a conceptual/ folder beside this file. Use the commented image example inside the template, add a meaningful image description, and include a caption. Upload the HTML and any image files together.

This is a static archive. Changes are made in the HTML file; there is no browser editor or submission form.
