Life & History
Early Life: Rutherford B. Hayes was born on October 4, 1822, in Delaware, Ohio. He studied law and became a successful lawyer before entering politics. Hayes was known for his strong sense of duty and education.
Military Career: During the Civil War, Hayes served as an officer in the Union Army. He was wounded several times but showed bravery and leadership, rising to the rank of major general.
Presidency (1877–1881): Hayes became the 19th President after a highly disputed election in 1876. As part of a political compromise, he ended Reconstruction by withdrawing federal troops from the South. He also worked on civil service reform to reduce government corruption.
Later Life: After leaving office, Hayes focused on education and prison reform. He remained active in public service and died on January 17, 1893.
