Life & History

Early Life: Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, in Stonewall, Texas. He grew up in a modest family and attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College, becoming a teacher before entering politics.

Political Career: Johnson served in the U.S. House of Representatives starting in 1937, then in the Senate from 1949. He became Senate Majority Leader, earning a reputation for his political skill and legislative expertise.

Presidency (1963–1969): LBJ assumed the presidency after John F. Kennedy’s assassination. He is best known for the Great Society programs, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Medicare, and escalating the Vietnam War.

Later Life: After leaving office, Johnson retired to his Texas ranch and died on January 22, 1973. He remains a pivotal figure in U.S. civil rights history.
