John Tyler
Life & History
Early Life: John Tyler was born on March 29, 1790, in Charles City County, Virginia. He grew up in a prominent political family and studied law at the College of William & Mary. Tyler entered politics early, serving in the Virginia legislature and later as governor of Virginia.
Political Career: Tyler served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Initially a Democrat, he later joined the Whig Party. In 1840, he was elected Vice President alongside William Henry Harrison.
Presidency (1841–1845): Tyler became the 10th President of the United States after Harrison’s sudden death, setting the precedent that the Vice President fully succeeds the President. His presidency saw the annexation of Texas, clashes with Congress, and his eventual expulsion from the Whig Party.
Later Life: After leaving office, Tyler retired to Virginia but returned to public service during the Civil War, serving in the Confederate Congress. He died on January 18, 1862, and is the only U.S. President buried under a foreign (Confederate) flag.
