Life & History
Early Life: John Quincy Adams was born on July 11, 1767, in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts. He was the eldest son of John Adams, 2nd President of the United States, and Abigail Adams. He studied at Harvard College, graduating in 1787.
Diplomatic and Political Career: Adams served as a diplomat in Europe, including postings in the Netherlands, Prussia, Russia, and Britain. He was a U.S. Senator, Secretary of State under James Monroe, and played a key role in negotiating the Treaty of Ghent (ending the War of 1812) and the Monroe Doctrine.
Presidency: Adams served as the 6th President of the United States from 1825 to 1829. His presidency focused on internal improvements, education, and scientific advancement. Though his term faced political opposition, he promoted the idea of a national university and modernization of infrastructure.
Later Life: After leaving office, Adams served in the House of Representatives for 17 years, becoming a strong opponent of slavery. He argued many cases before Congress and worked with the American Anti-Slavery Society. He died on February 23, 1848, in Washington, D.C.
