Life & History
Early Life: John Adams was born on October 30, 1735, in Braintree, Massachusetts. He studied at Harvard College and became a lawyer, gaining respect for his intelligence and principled character. Early in his career, he became involved in local politics and colonial legal matters.
Revolution: Adams was a leading advocate for American independence and helped draft the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He served as a diplomat in Europe, negotiating treaties and securing crucial support for the fledgling nation. His leadership helped shape the early United States government and foreign policy.
Presidency: He served as the 2nd President of the United States from 1797 to 1801. Adams faced challenges such as the Quasi-War with France and domestic tensions over the Alien and Sedition Acts. Despite political struggles, he maintained the peaceful transition of power to his successor, Thomas Jefferson.
Later Life: After leaving the presidency, Adams retired to his farm in Quincy, Massachusetts. He continued writing letters and essays, reflecting on government and history. He died peacefully on July 4, 1826, the same day as Thomas Jefferson, leaving a lasting legacy in American history.
