James Monroe
Life & History
Early Life: James Monroe was born on April 28, 1758, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He studied at the College of William & Mary and served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
Political Career: Monroe served in the Virginia House of Delegates, as a U.S. Senator, and held diplomatic posts in France and Britain. He was Governor of Virginia and Secretary of State and War under President Madison.
Presidency: Monroe served as the 5th President of the United States from 1817 to 1825. His presidency is known as the “Era of Good Feelings” and for the Monroe Doctrine, which opposed European colonialism in the Americas.
Later Life: After leaving office, Monroe retired to his estate in Virginia and remained active in national affairs until his death on July 4, 1831.
