James K. Polk

Life & History

Early Life: James Knox Polk was born on November 2, 1795, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was the oldest of ten children and experienced serious health issues as a child, including surgery without anesthesia. His family moved to Tennessee, where he grew up and developed an interest in politics. Polk attended the University of North Carolina and graduated with honors in 1818. He later studied law and became a lawyer.

Political Career: Polk began his career in Tennessee politics and became a strong supporter of Andrew Jackson. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years and was elected Speaker of the House. Polk later became Governor of Tennessee. His loyalty to Democratic principles helped him win the presidential nomination in 1844. He was considered a "dark horse" candidate who surprised many by winning.

Presidency (1845–1849): Polk served as the 11th President of the United States and is known for expanding the nation’s territory. During his presidency, Texas was annexed and the Oregon boundary was settled with Great Britain. He led the United States during the Mexican-American War, which added California and the Southwest to U.S. territory. Polk achieved nearly all of his major goals in just one term. He chose not to run for reelection.

Later Life: After leaving office, Polk retired to Nashville, Tennessee. His time as president left him physically exhausted. Only a few months after returning home, he became ill, likely from cholera. He died on June 15, 1849, at age 53. His retirement was one of the shortest of any U.S. president.
