Life & History
Early Life: Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. He grew up in a poor frontier family and received little formal education but loved reading and learning.
Political Career: Lincoln served in the Illinois State Legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives. He became nationally known for debates on slavery during his campaign for U.S. Senate in 1858, which he lost to Stephen Douglas.
Presidency (1861–1865): Elected the 16th President, Lincoln led the United States through the Civil War, preserving the Union and issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, which began the process of freeing enslaved people.
Later Life & Legacy: Lincoln was re-elected in 1864 but was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. He is remembered as one of America’s greatest presidents and a champion of liberty and equality.
